Research and Development

Restoration is more than just cleaning. It is a multi-stage process requiring innovative methods and resources that are often technically elaborate.

BELFOR is committed to innovation through research and development. Our Technical Support Center in Neufahrn close to Munich, Germany, is staffed with some of the brightest minds in the industry. BELFOR scientists and engineers work continuously in the R&D laboratory to:

  • Analyze unidentified or unusual damage deposits and determine proper methods of restoration;
  • Develop proprietary restoration products and methods using new technologies;
  • Design and test restoration chemical and agents;
  • Audit new restoration procedures and products in the laboratory or on site for quality control.

Their goal is to make recovery and repair efforts more efficient in the customer's best interest. More efficient means more sustainable, more effective, more economical – and faster.

For example, the Technical Support team developed what is known as Soot Removal Film. The idea came from the restoration sector, where experts have long been using latex to restore monuments to “their former glory.” Transferring this process to soot removal was BELFOR’s idea. Technical Support further developed it and prepared it for use on items damaged by fire. In the soot removal film process, the soot is drawn off of contaminated surfaces into the film. This reduces the time needed for repair operations, cuts any operational downtime and saves costs.

“Soot removal film was an entirely new development”, says Susanne Klupski, Head of BELFOR Technical Support. “Something like that isn’t just invented from one day to the next. One has to experiment and start over again and again in order to find even better solutions.”
