Learning From Hurricanes Florence and Michael

Entering the peak of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, Hurricanes Florence and Michael substantially impacted communities across the southeastern United States in recent months.

Hurricane Florence approached the Carolina coastline in September weakening from a Category 4 to a Category 1 storm with sustained winds of 90 mph. The storm gradually weakened to a notably slow pace and caused extensive flooding across North and South Carolina. Subsequently following in early October, Hurricane Michael rapidly intensified from a tropical storm to a major Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 155 mph causing storm surging, flash flooding and severe damage across the Florida Panhandle and surrounding areas. Meteorologists are predicting that additional tropical storms and potential hurricanes could develop before the official end of the season on November 30th.

Sharing expert insight from numerous years of experience in the disaster restoration industry, BELFOR CEO, Sheldon Yellen, reveals how families, business owners and communities can prepare to safely endure storms of similar capacity. In a recent survey commissioned by BELFOR, it was discovered that an alarming two-thirds of American homeowners are unprepared for a disaster situation. From developing and practicing an emergency response plan with your family to creating an inventory list of all valuable possessions, Sheldon recommends that having a comprehensive plan of action in place before a storm occurs can serve as a remarkable advantage.

As BELFOR's emergency response teams continue working diligently to repair widespread storm damage throughout the region, we strongly encourage everyone to implement this advice and advocate the importance to family members, friends, colleagues, neighbors and more.
